Buying an air purifier in Luxembourg

Luxembourg is a heavily urbanised country. 92% of its population lives in urban areas1, meaning that a significant majority of the Luxembourgian population is exposed to levels of air pollution that exceed the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s recommendations on a daily basis. Exposure to air pollution particles has various effects on health including increased incidence of respiratory disease, heart disease, allergies, multiple types of cancer (especially lung cancer), and more. What is the air quality status in Luxembourg? What are the main sources of air pollution in Luxembourg? Can installing an air purifier in Luxembourg help? Read on to learn more.

Air quality in Luxembourg

Efforts are being made in many European countries, Luxembourg included, to reduce emissions that lead to poor air quality. Despite the fact that these numbers are slowly being reduced, exposure is still a problem for people living in urban areas. In cities, road transportation represents the most significant contribution to total greenhouse gas emissions (upwards of 72% of all greenhouse gas emissions)2. However, industrial emissions and heating and cooking with wood pellets and natural gas all contribute to air pollution in an urban setting as well, especially in Luxembourg3.

The main types of air pollution in Luxembourg

As part of a 2023 study, air quality was assessed across multiple urban areas throughout Luxembourg. Air quality was tested during peak rush hours (7 to 9 AM and 5 to 7 PM Monday to Friday). The study reported levels of the following pollutants that exceed WHO recommendations:

All of the above pollutants have different effects on health, but airway irritation, respiratory diseases (like asthma and COPD), allergies, multiple types of cancer (especially lung cancer), fatigue, infertility, mental health conditions like anxiety and depression, and decreased productivity are all linked to air pollution exposure. Children, pregnant women, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals are the groups the most at risk.

Efforts to improve air quality in Luxembourg

Many of the most dangerous air pollutants are surveyed by the Luxembourgian government. They include all of the pollutants listed above as well as sulphur dioxide (SO2). Local environmental policy also aims to better track and efficiently manage urban air pollution levels with the Luxembourgian government purchasing its own semi-mobile air pollution measuring station that publishes monthly and annual reports, all of which are made available to the public. Passive diffusion tubes were also implemented throughout the City of Luxembourg in 2017, allowing for surveillance of the evolution of air pollutant concentrations at 11 strategic locations throughout the city4.

The City of Luxembourg is also taking action in order to reduce air pollutant concentration and improve air quality by promoting and facilitating more eco-friendly transport (bikes, foot traffic), enforcing low-emission zones, improving and updating public transportation systems (including investing in ‘clean energy’ vehicles for public transportation that are either hybrids or run on natural gas), and plans are underway for a light rail system4. Citizens are educated in order to sensitise them on the issue of air pollution: they are encouraged to use more environmentally-friendly heating methods and to reduce or avoid fossil fuels for both domestic use and vehicle transportation.

Despite our best efforts to reduce our own contributions, outdoor air quality is often out of our control. The best way to protect you, your loved ones, and coworkers from its dangers is by keeping your indoor air clean. Remember: we spend 90% of our time indoors, and indoor air is 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Investing in a high-performance air purifier is an efficient way to reduce your risk of contracting and/or aggravating air pollution-related illness.

How to choose an air purifier in Luxembourg?

Consider your specific needs

An air purifier serves many purposes. By removing air pollutants and contaminants from indoor spaces (especially fine particles like PM2.5) that serve as respiratory disease triggers, air purifiers provide relief for those suffering from respiratory conditions like asthma, allergies, and COPD. Allergens like pollen, dust and dust mites, pet hair and dander, and mould and spores are all common triggers that are removed by an air purifier.

Before making your purchase, consider the size of your space. All air purifiers have a maximum surface area performance capacity and are designed to filter the air in spaces of a maximum size. Be sure that your device is properly sized to the room in which you aim to install it.

Choose a device with adequate filtration technologies

Keep in mind that not just any air purifier in Luxembourg will combat fine particle pollutants. Only high-performance air purifiers containing High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA)-certified filters are guaranteed to remove 99.97% of all air pollutants down to 0.01 microns in a single pass, even including germs like viruses and bacteria. An air purifier with a HEPA filter is essential when combatting fine particles like those found in road traffic emissions and allergens.

Furthermore, air purifiers that contain multiple filtration technologies, particularly activated carbon filtration, are also able to filter toxic gases like VOCs and unpleasant odours found in the home or workplace. An air purifier simply containing a HEPA filter will not combat either of these types of air pollution.

Some air purifiers stand out on the air purification market by offering even more thorough air purification technologies and performance in combatting air pollutants. Eoleaf air purifiers offer a proprietary 8-step air purification method that ensures you are breathing the cleanest indoor air possible. In addition to HEPA-certified filters and activated carbon filters, it also includes pre-filters, bamboo filters with an antibacterial coating, photocatalysis, UVC sterilisation, and ionisation technologies. It serves as a 2-in-1 air purifier/ioniser, all without releasing any ozone.

Consider characteristics associated with everyday use

A few other details to consider before purchasing an air purifier are noise level, maintenance, and smart features.

Noise level

If you plan to install an air purifier in a space that requires low noise levels like a bedroom or office, choose a device that is both effective and discreet. Your device should never exceed 60 dB of noise even at its highest fan speed, ensuring that the users of the space are not disturbed. Eoleaf air purifiers make the perfect addition to homes and offices for those looking for a device that purifies the air efficiently and quietly.

Maintenance

Maintenance of your air purifier should be easy. Unlike many other air purifier brands that require replacing multiple filters and following multiple replacement schedules, Eoleaf air purifiers contain all of their filtration technologies in one simple filter block. This filter block requires changing once per year, the process of which takes just a couple of minutes and can be performed by anyone (no technician required).

Smart features

Modern air purifiers should come equipped with smart features that make your life and air quality monitoring easier. Eoleaf air purifiers offer air sensors that track air quality in real-time, a Bluetooth remote control, Wi-Fi connectivity, smartphone app compatibility (Tuya Smart), hands-free gesture control, and voice commands, to name a few. They are also equipped with wheels or handles for easy transportation.
